The European Commissioner for Justice called on EU authorities to tighten the rules for provision of citizenship and residence permits in exchange for investments or real estate purchases.
According to her, the European Commission is “very concerned” about the situation with the so-called “golden passports”, which can be used to launder money and undermine the EU’s security. The new principles for citizenship granting in exchange for investments will be tentatively announced this autumn.
The report of the European Commission says that “golden passports” are most often issued by Cyprus, Malta and Greece, and the recipients of such documents are mainly Russians, as well as citizens of the former Soviet republics and China.
Now citizenship in exchange for investment can also be obtained in Austria, Germany, Ireland and the UK.
